About Us

The Brandeis University Mock Trial Association (BUMTA) is the official, student-run mock trial organization of Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. Founded in 2001 by a few mock trial enthusiasts as a one-team program, we have now grown to sponsor four competitive teams each year. BUMTA is a member of the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA), which means that in addition to competing at Invitational tournaments hosted by schools, we also attend AMTA-sanctioned Regionals and beyond. As a program run, administrated and trained entirely by its undergraduate student members, we are proud to have advanced beyond AMTA Regionals many times and qualified for the National Championship Tournament in 2005 and 2008.

BUMTA is unique among collegiate mock trial programs in that, in keeping with Brandeis University’s founding philosophy of inclusion, we place all interested students on teams. We begin as teams of equal competitive strength in the fall for Invitationals and then stack into A, B, C, and D, etc. in the spring for Regionals. Additionally, as of 2022, BUMTA is the largest collegiate mock trial organization in the country!

BUMTA also hosts our very own Justice Louis D. Brandeis Invitational, which will celebrate its 18th year this fall. To learn more about past tournaments and our November 2024 tournament, please visit our Invitational page.
