Adapted from Bi Feiyu’s novella, this story has been reimagined as a TV series, opera, stage play, and dance production.
In 1979, a young actress named Xiao Yanqiu stunned audiences with her portrayal of Chang’e, embodying the moon goddess so vividly that she gradually became trapped within the role herself. A heated argument with her mentor, Li Xuefen, about how to interpret the character eventually led to widespread backlash. The play Chang’e was taken off stage, and Yanqiu was reassigned to teach at an art school.
There, she met Chunlai — a spirited young student who reminded her of her own youth and the future of traditional opera.
Two decades later, in 1999, an old fan who had long admired Yanqiu helped fund the troupe to revive Chang’e. Yet this time, facing age and time’s erosion, can Xiao Yanqiu once again step onto the stage as Chang’e and reclaim her lost glory?
