The purpose of the Astronomy Club is to advance the awareness of the cosmos and optical observation of outer space on the Brandeis campus. We host celestial gazing sessions using telescopes and binoculars, public nights, and educational events. Our primary telescope is a 24" cassegrain housed in the Abelson Observatory. The aim of the Brandeis Astronomy Club is to be a conduit for our community's use and enjoyment of the observatory while maintaining the optics and specialized equipment housed there.
The Brandeis Astronomy Club is active on and off campus. Our events are planned with one goal in mind: to expose members of our community to the incredible phenomena of the cosmos.
Guests are welcome to come to the Abelson Observatory to use our custom 1967 Tinsley telscope. At 24 inches, the telescope is one of the largest in the Boston area and provides excellent views of celestial objects.
Using one of our portable telescopes, we find a location with low levels of light pollution to stargaze, view rare phenomena, and teach about the practice of astronomy. We also frequently bring binoculars and planispheres, helping our guests learn constellations and star hopping.
When rare astronomical events occur, we try our best to help as many people to observe them as possible. We traveled to St. Johnsbury, VT to observe a total solar eclipse, viewed a comet over the Charles River, and went to Mt. Wachusett to see the Aurora Borealis in 2024.
